1 John Devotional

Part of the Family
This is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. 1 John 5:3.4

When you were growing up, I hope that you had a childhood that was great like mine. My parents were amazing, godly and loving. Yet, sometimes I got the mistaken idea that I would only be loved if I was perfect and followed all the rules. On the contrary, I was loved because I was born into the family. However, when I understood that the rules were made to increase the harmony and joy of the home, it made me want to follow the rules out of love and respect.

John says that our love for God is much like that. Our obedience flows out of a love for God rather than a duty to God. When it comes to duty, well, let's just be honest, we owe everything to Him. Thankfully, He requires us just to love Him and follow His commandments. They aren't overbearing. In fact, when we follow His Word, our life gets better!

By following His plan for our lives, we are made overcomers, conquerors and winners! So today don't focus on following the rules, focus on following Jesus.

  1. Let your heart and mind simply focus on loving Jesus today. (Remember, you're part of the family!)

  2. At the end of the day (or maybe the week) look back to see how that love for Jesus became faith in your life.
